Fairgrounds Manager

Key Responsibilities

Operations and Facilities Management

  • Oversee daily operation of all fairgrounds buildings, arenas, barns, grounds, and equipment.

  • Maintain facilities, including routine repairs, preventative maintenance, and coordination of contracted services.

  • Ensure all buildings, utilities, and grounds meet safety, accessibility, and regulatory standards.

  • Develop and implement facility use policies, emergency procedures, and maintenance schedules.

Event Coordination

  • Manage scheduling and logistics for the annual Custer County Fair and other year-round events (rental events, livestock shows, exhibitions, community activities, etc.).

  • Serve as primary point of contact for event organizers, renters, vendors, and community groups.

  • Coordinate set-up, equipment needs, staffing, and clean-up for events.

  • Promote usage of the fairgrounds through outreach, partnerships, and effective communication.

Administration and Budgeting

  • Develop, monitor, and report on the fairgrounds budget, including revenue from rentals and events.

  • Oversee purchasing, billing, and financial tracking for fairgrounds operations.

  • Secure bids and manage contracts for services, supplies, and capital improvement projects.

  • Prepare reports and updates for the County Board and/or Fair Board as requested.

Staff and Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise seasonal staff, part-time workers, and volunteers.

  • Ensure a safe, positive work environment that supports teamwork and effective operations.

Community Relations

  • Build strong working relationships with local organizations, exhibitors, sponsors, and residents.

  • Represent the fairgrounds in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Assist in planning and promoting county fair activities, youth programs, and community events.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in agriculture, facility management, business, or related field is a plus.

  • Experience in facility management, maintenance, event planning, or a closely related field.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer-service skills.

  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment such as tractors, mowers, skid steers, and basic tools.

  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours during peak seasons (especially before and during the county fair).

  • Basic understanding of budgeting, scheduling, and record-keeping using

  • Microsoft applications and QuickBooks accounting software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with county or municipal boards, fair boards, or nonprofit organizations.

  • Knowledge of livestock facilities, groundskeeping, and agricultural event operations.

  • Familiarity with safety regulations, ADA requirements, and risk management practices.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to perform physical tasks related to groundskeeping and facility maintenance.

Compensation

  • Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and established by the Custer

  • County Ag Society Board. Details will be discussed during the hiring process. Room for growth parallel to the success of the facility.
